The earliest light planes to fly over Torroella de Montgrí did so over 30 years ago, surprisingly all thanks to film Out of Africa, which inspired local resident Carlos Manica to build a flying club. It was such that a small air field was established in the rocky ground of the Empordà in the 1980s with two take-off and landing strips and a hanger for light planes. The project was a great success, and Carlos’ dream became a reality. Now yours will too, as you fly like a bird over the Costa Brava, maybe even piloting the plane yourself!
For panoramic flights, the center generally uses two high-altitude aircraft: a Tecnam P92 and an Aeroprakt A22. Both planes have excellent visibility and acoustic insulation, with the passenger seat also located beside the pilot’s, ensuring maximum comfort once inside. Safety is of course guaranteed, and you will be allowed to decide on the direction and route for the flight. As for the duration, 20, 30 and 45 minutes are all available, or even a full hour. The geography itself is highly impressive, with one of the Costa Brava’s most beautiful stretches spread out in front of you. You can fly over the Gulf of Roses and the ruins of the former Greek settlement of Emporion, now converted into one of the coast’s leading tourist attractions. You can also curve over Sa Riera, a fishing village that transforms every year into an idyllic family resort. Or what about the Medes Islands, an archipelago composed of seven islands favorites among pirates and nowadays divers! A bird’s eye view is certainly a spectacular one! The more daring and curious among you can learn more about the kind of acrobatics a light plane is capable of, with the pilot showing you how to take off, turn, climb, descend, use the thrust, adjust the speed and land. Under their supervision, you’ll also be able to take control of the plane for the ultimate adrenalin rush.
